The Agritainment Concept

8/29/2007

For some time now, our pursuit of economic growth has been defined by decentralizing development and bringing commercialization to the countryside. The construction of shopping malls is perceived as the initiation of progress for any province. These enclosed and air-conditioned establishments are also what most Filipinos consider as the primary destination for recreation and entertainment.

On the other hand, the concept of Agritainment introduces us to another approach to boost the economy, providing not just entertainment but enrichment as well. It allows us a rich combination of education and enjoyment through an experience of the rural life, complete with a farm setting, housing selected animals, and offering several landscaping themes. Amidst the fast-paced and technology-equipped way of living in the metropolis, city dwellers intrinsically long for the unhurried way of life in the countryside. Agritainment developments can provide us the venue and surroundings to learn and understand first hand the ecological balance and healthy lifestyle that urban living still needs to espouse.

The Agritainment concept is breaking new ground in our country. A 60,000 sq.m. area has been allocated for an Agritainment Theme Park within the 415 hectare Hacienda Escudero in San Pablo, Laguna and Tiaong, Quezon. It is located within the popular tourist destination called Villa Escudero. The transition of the well-known villa into Hacienda Escudero marks its expansion into a mixed-use first class development project, intended as a leisure and tourism destination.

To be involved in translating this vision to a physical reality is an exciting challenge for us in our office, Architecture Network, and for the landscape design consultant, DQA Environmental Design, Inc. Design work for the Free Admission Zone of the Agritainment Theme Park has already commenced. The design will preserve the historical trust of Hacienda Escudero, while espousing a relaxing and rejuvenating lifestyle. This project will launch the mission of its developer, Landco Pacific Corporation, to showcase the richness of the country’s culture and afford the present generation a first hand experience of the truly Filipino way of life.

Planning an efficient layout and circulation is critical. The park should be able to accommodate a maximum capacity of 3,000 persons. School children are expected to come in busloads while families and small groups are equally welcome to enjoy the tour. What's more, business seminars and wedding receptions will likewise be accommodated. With a good plan, these simultaneous activities can be successfully conducted, similar to the harmonious performance of a symphonic orchestra.

The Hacienda Escudero Agritainment Theme Park will also serve as a support to the country’s agricultural industry. It proposes to promote awareness and arouse public support towards the country’s major contributor to economic growth. Our country nestles 47% of agricultural land and almost half of the labor force in agricultural activities. These figures help us see its importance to our economy. Providing a venue to understand this sector will be a valuable opportunity for both the urban and rural establishments to mutually enrich each other. With cooperation, this will speed up our country’s move forward.
