Open Plan Living

8/29/2008

In an ideal home, privacy and security are essential considerations. In response, designs for compartmentalized houses with fully enclosed rooms have become the norm. This enables each occupant to have his own private space and lends a degree of psychological security. On the other hand, people also feel the need to expand and breathe, commune with nature, and interact with others, pursuits more amenable to larger, more open spaces.

This prompted well-known photographer and fellow rider, Francis Rivera, and his beloved spouse, Carol, to come up with a unique alternative: their Caliraya sanctuary, which they fondly call "Casa Amore" or "House of Love". I was inspired to write about their weekend home after soaking in its ambience for a full day, complemented by a dose of Carol's excellent cooking.

The house follows the Open plan concept, meaning minimal partitioning and generous spaces.  Its open concept is evidenced not only in the interior partitions (or lack thereof), but is likewise seen in the use of glass walls around the entire house. According to Francis and Carol, they opted to have an open plan concept for a number of reasons.

Openness and abundance of space revitalizes the self, particularly when the beauty of nature is seen and experienced, in this case, Lake Caliraya and its surrounding greenery. Looking out on the lake is really relaxing. It takes you miles away from the cramped up spaces you usually have in the city. The wide, open spaces literally "broaden your horizon". Here, too, the sky seems a lot bigger, a lot clearer. It can give the viewer a fresh perspective on his work, his relations, his life.

Allowing sunlight and fresh air indoors is the best form of detoxification. In the confined spaces of city structures, we constantly and unknowingly inhale chemicals from detergents, cleaning agents, insecticides, preservatives, second-hand air, and pollution, among others. With open plan spaces, air circulates more freely. Fewer walls and more windows let in more light, which can prove cost- and energy efficient. Sunlight is also the best disinfectant, which makes for healthier surroundings.

The living area, dining room, and kitchen are found in one huge area. This set-up brings family together, encouraging interaction. The bedrooms are on the second floor perched over the living area. Despite having open balconies, privacy is achieved by positioning the rooms at a higher level. Although they overlook the living area, they still maintain their privacy. Every room is flexible enough to close off whenever necessary.

This type of planning promotes family bonding and togetherness. To ensure the couple’s purpose, TVs, iPods, computers, and PlayStations are discouraged. The family members are then compelled to leave all worries back in the city. The focus is on a laid-back lifestyle: reading, cooking, trekking, kayaking, and enjoying all the other activities nature has to offer.

Many people feel a need for openness and space. For them, open plan designs may be the answer, affording flexibility, accessibility, and easy maintenance. Sometimes, the solution can be had simply by knocking down a few interior walls, opening up some windows, or decongesting furnishings. Perhaps, repainting with brighter, lighter colors can help. Bringing nature in through plants and water features may also do the trick. For Francis and Carol, enjoying nature and open plan living have become a passion.
