Feng Shui, One Way to Achieve Peace of Mind

5/12/2005

Despite modern technology and the urbanized lifestyles of today, many people still subscribe to some age-old arts and traditions when building their homes and offices.  One of the most popular set of principles is the practice of Feng shui, pronounced by locals as “fung suy” or by westerners as “fung shway”.  The name derives from the Chinese terms for “wind” and “water”, which as the traditional sources of energy, must coexist in perfect balance to bring peace and tranquility to their users.

Feng shui is a compendium of over 2000 years of study by Chinese sages on aspects that affect the energies surrounding people, including their environment and structures.  The emperors employed mathematicians and scientists to study the cyclic forces, seasonal changes, astronomy, geology, geometry, and coupled these with intuition and common sense.  They wanted to harness positive energy, the “chi”, towards good health and prosperity.

This knowledge eventually filtered down to the commoners and also found their way to the rest of the world.  Through the centuries, many have used these “secrets of the ages” and swear to their efficacy.  People, after all, in their desire for perfection and happy lives, will try anything.
If you believe that feng shui will work for you when building your home or place of business, reading up on the art may help.  Or you may take your interest a step further and consult geomancers and feng shui masters for advice.  The principles can be married with the most modern designs to come up with the structure that will satisfy you.

Other Approaches

On the other hand, each one of us possesses a sense of what is good or bad, only the intensity varies.  We are free too chose what is best for us. No one is in a better position to tell you what will work for you more than yourself.  There are no strict rules or guidelines to follow.  We need not be very rigid.  We only need to follow our intuition, our gut feel.
As long as we do not compromise the welfare of others, then this is all right too.  The main objective is to achieve that form of perfection, beauty, and peace as WE see it.  Once we realize these, we can then have peace of mind and be inspired to creative and productive living.
For many, communing with nature puts oneself in a positive mental attitude.  For people like this, open planning, wide windows, or indoor gardens will make it easier to appreciate nature, and thereby recharge them.
For others, prayer and spirituality orients one towards a positive direction. This is attained by placing revered icons in central locations in their homes.
Likewise, simplicity and straight-forwardness in the design or in patterns will help un-clutter   thinking.  Simple lines and forms also result in easy maintenance and thus, lighter housework.
Colors are likewise important keys to moods and feelings.  Psychological studies on colors and their effect on us can be very enlightening and helpful when designing and decorating our homes.

Positive Mental Attitude

For as long as you can put yourself in a positive mental attitude, be it through the tenets of feng shui or any practical approaches, you create for yourself a positive lifestyle and enable peace of mind.  To think is to create.  Believe that you are lucky and you will be.  Open yourself to opportunities and you will recognize them when they knock.  Once you have a positive attitude, you become healthier, mentally and physically.  Your creativity and drive are enhanced, which enables you to grow more in your career.  The brighter outlook makes you a more pleasing person and may inspire the people around you to be the same.
